Do your designs require batteryless multi-turn detection and an extended turn-count range?

Battery-backed, geared, and Wiegand-based methods are commonly considered for multi-turn detection. In actual product design, however, each method has its own design considerations. Conventional solutions have typically required extensive evaluation of factors such as component placement constraints and measures to prevent count errors.

Although position can be retained while the main power is off, the battery introduces transportation and storage controls and restrictions. Battery replacement and service life also complicate long-term reliability and maintenance planning. In addition, the battery consumes valuable enclosure and PCB space.

Multi-turn position can be detected mechanically, but the measurable multi-turn count is limited by gear size and the number of gears that can be installed. Gear wear and assembly accuracy must also be considered. In addition, the gear train consumes enclosure space and can limit product miniaturization.

Rotation can be detected during power-off operation without a battery, but the design must account for magnet and sensor placement constraints and measures to prevent count errors. Relevant existing patents must also be considered during design and development.

AKM's new multi-turn solution retains multi-turn position without a battery or gears

Asahi Kasei Microdevices (AKM) offers a multi-turn solution that requires neither a battery nor gears.

By combining the AK7435, a Wiegand sensor, a multipole magnet, and FeRAM, the solution enables multi-turn detection without an external battery or gears. Compared with conventional Wiegand-based methods, it minimizes component placement constraints and the need for countermeasures against count errors.

The AK7435 is an IC that manages the multi-turn count. Its compact 3 mm x 3 mm package is suitable for integration into 20 mm-square compact servos and encoders, helping reduce both system size and cost.

Combining the AK7435 (3 mm x 3 mm package) with an AKM-recommended Wiegand sensor enables a compact, low-profile batteryless multi-turn configuration. This supports integration into compact servo motors and encoders, as well as replacement of existing modules.
