Simultaneous detection of positions/respirations of multiple persons

Millimeter-wave Radar

This section describes the simultaneous detection of positions/respirations of multiple persons that is realized by the millimeter-wave radar IC of Asahi Kasei Microdevices (AKM).

By combining the high-performance of millimeter-wave radar IC of AKM and algorithms, simultaneous detection of positions and respirations of multiple persons is realized.

Detection of non-stationary multiple individuals separately

Detection of non-stationary multiple individuals separately

There are some detection condition issues in the conventional millimeter-wave radars such as "not being able to identify multiple persons individually", "not being able to detect non-stationary persons", and "small detectable area".

By combining high-performance IC and algorithms, AKM achieved the following functions:

  • Simultaneous detection of respirations of multiple persons
  • Detecting the position of a person who is not at rest
  • Wide sensing area
  • Identification of multiple persons individually within a distance of 50cm*

* Ability to detect and identify separately multiple persons at a distance of 1m from the radar

Look at the video to see how the radar actually detects the positions/respirations of the persons.

  • The radar is detecting the positions and respiratory rates of three individuals separately.
  • Even if the fourth person is walking around, the radar continuously detects the positions and respiratory rates separately.
  • It is also possible to detect respirations of six persons.

Check the state of indoor sensing on the video.

  • The radar can detect the presence of persons without any light. A person has broken in and has taken a package on the chair.
  • Millimeter waves penetrate an object depending on the type. Therefore, the radar can detect the person who is hidden behind the cover.
  • The radar will not incorrectly detect a moving robot cleaner as a person.

How can such high isolation be achieved?

The millimeter-wave radar IC of AKM has the following characteristics:
  • TX/RX 4-ch high integration achieved by CMOS
  • Built-in patented synthesizer technology
  • Built-in signal processing
  • High-speed sampling achieved by the high-speed high accuracy ADC, in which AKM excels

In addition, there are many other reasons why the millimeter-wave radar IC of AKM is chosen.

AK5816

  • Frequency modulation of 7 GHz width is realized in the frequency band of 57-64 GHz
  • Specializing in MIMO radar sensing led to the realization of low power consumption while maintaining transmission and reception 4-ch
  • Target position data can be output by signal-processing inside IC.
  • Data can be output not only on MIPI CSI-2 ® but also on SPI・I²C communication.
