Samples of coreless current sensor for traction inverters will be available in Q3 CY2025

2025/04/11

Description

Asahi Kasei Microdevices Corporation (AKM) will start sample distribution of the contactless coreless current sensor uniquely suited to traction inverter in Q3 of CY2025. This device is a contactless current sensor for large current in traction inverters and has achieved a signifincant reduction in system size compared to conventional current sensors with magnetic cores.

This product will be on display at PCIM Europe 2025 in Nuremberg, Germany, May 6-8, 2025. In addition, AKM will exhibit a PoC that integrates a current sensor into a power module, which was discovered through joint technology verification with Silicon Austria Labs (SAL), with the aim of further miniaturization.

Features

Contributes to significant miniaturization in system size and weight

This device is a contactless current sensor capable of handling large currents of several kiloamperes. The structure does not have a magnetic core, contributing to a significant reduction in system size from existing current sensors with magnetic cores.

High resolution contributes to high efficiency in low-torque xEV operation

By leveraging the low-noise characteristics of AKM’s high-sensitivity compound Hall element, it is possible to achieve high resolution - around 1 Arms - even at high current levels, such as several hundred amperes*.  As a result, high-resolution current detection is possible even at low current levels, enabling high efficiency during low-torque operation of xEVs.

Technology for integrating current sensors into power modules

AKM collaboration with SAL to validate the technology for integrating current sensors into power modules. This contributes to further miniaturization and a reduction in the number of components.
