Simplifying the oil, water, and dust protection required for optical encoders helps reduce encoder costs.
Semiconductor Magnetoresistive Elements
In recent years, the prices of various components have risen, making component-count reduction an urgent priority. Encoders, in particular, are made up of a wide range of components, so integrating components and simplifying protective parts are important.
In optical encoders, oil or dust contamination can cause bit dropouts, leading to angle-detection errors. For this reason, machine tools and other equipment operating in harsh environments require a high level of protection against oil, water, and dust. However, the additional components needed to achieve this level of protection, such as seals and housings, can drive up encoder costs and increase exposure to rising material prices.
AKM’s magnetic encoder solution uses a detection method that is less susceptible to oil and dust. This simplifies the oil, water, and dust protection required for optical encoders and helps reduce encoder costs.
In addition, AKM’s proprietary semiconductor magnetoresistive element (SMRE) technology addresses the challenges of conventional magnetic encoders, delivering a solution with accuracy and resolution comparable to optical encoders. Because no photodetector or LED is required, the solution can achieve both high-speed rotation and high accuracy without being limited by the response characteristics of an optical encoder’s receiver system or by LED light output.
