Detects diverse motions simultaneously
with a single magnetic sensor for next-generation UIs

2025/09/30

Description

Asahi Kasei Microdevices (AKM) will launch mass production of its new 3D magnetic sensor, AK09974C, in October 2025.

The AK09974C is a 3D magnetic sensor optimized for user interface (UI) applications in smartphones, XR devices, healthcare equipment, and other electronic products. It addresses the needs for space-saving designs and simultaneous detection of complex operations and motions, supporting the realization of next-generation UIs.

With a single sensor, it can detect not only basic movements such as linear motion, rotation, opening/closing, and tilting, but also complex combined motions. Its wide measurement range, low-noise design, and built-in processing functions enable compact system designs while achieving both design flexibility and high accuracy.

Description

Features

Stable and high-precision sensing achieved by its wide measurement range and low-noise design

The AK09974C is a 3D magnetic sensor capable of detecting magnetic fields along the X, Y, and Z axes within a single package. In combination with a magnet, it enables a simple configuration for measuring rotational angles and stroke displacement.

With a wide measurement range of ±78 mT on the X/Y axes and ±200 mT on the Z axis, magnets can be placed closer to the sensor. This reduces the impact of external magnetic fields and ensures stable sensing performance.

Furthermore, AKM’s proprietary low-noise design enables highly responsive detection of even minute magnetic field variations. It delivers high stability and reliability even in complex motion detection.

Built-in processing functions for simpler, more power-efficient systems

The AK09974C can detect not only basic movements such as linear motion, rotation, opening/closing, and tilting, but also complex combined motions.

The sensor also incorporates the processing functions such as angle calculation, relative threshold settings, and interrupt output (IBI: In-Band Interrupt). This design allows diverse 3D magnetic data to be utilized simply and efficiently.

By offloading part of the processing to the sensor, it helps simplification of overall system architecture and reduction of power consumption.

Compact package and wide measurement range enable space-saving, miniaturized designs

The compact package (0.76 × 0.76 × 0.50mm) and wide measurement range allow magnets to be placed closer to the sensor, contributing to system miniaturization.

This supports space-efficient and flexible layouts, even in devices requiring miniaturization.
