Semiconductor Magnetoresistive Elements (SMRE)

In recent years, machine tools have increasingly used higher spindle speeds to improve machining accuracy and productivity. This has created demand for high-speed, high-precision control. Encoders used in these systems must also respond quickly and withstand exposure to oil, dust, and other contaminants.

By using semiconductor magnetoresistive elements (SMREs), Asahi Kasei Microdevices (AKM) reduces the effects of magnetic hysteresis and improves the S/N ratio, addressing two challenges associated with conventional magnetic encoders. Our solution delivers accuracy and resolution comparable to optical encoders while enabling stable angle detection even at high rotational speeds. In addition, the inherent environmental robustness of magnetic sensing simplifies protection against oil, water, and dust, helping reduce encoder costs.

In addition to providing sensor elements, AKM offers broad support, from magnet selection and magnetic-field simulation to circuit design.
