New Product: Next-generation current sensor for automotive OBC applications, supporting high-current measurement of several hundred amperes
Coreless current sensor for traction inverters
The traction inverter, a core component of EVs, faces numerous challenges, including performance enhancement and miniaturization.
To address these challenges, AKM has developed an external conductor type coreless current sensor for traction inverters capable of handling large currents of several hundred amperes or more. Mass production is scheduled to begin soon. Compared to conventional cored type current sensors, it maintains equivalent key characteristics while enabling significant downsizing of inverter systems.
At PCIM Europe 2026, AKM will showcase a Proof of Concept (PoC) that integrates the current sensor into a power module, developed through joint technical validation with Silicon Austria Labs (SAL). This PoC contributes to further system miniaturization and reduction in the number of components.
In addition, AKM will present a module-type coreless current sensor solution designed to simplify compact and high-voltage-resistant system design for customers.
Coreless current sensor with ΣΔ digital output enabling low-heat operation and system miniaturization
AKM will demonstrate a comparison of heat generation between the CQ36 series, a coreless current sensor with ΣΔ digital output, and conventional shunt resistors.
The CQ36 series integrates the functions of a “shunt resistor + isolated ADC” into a single device. This innovative current sensor reduces heat generation to approximately one-tenth compared with conventional solutions. In addition, it eliminates the need for an isolated power supply on the primary side, significantly reducing component count and enabling system miniaturization.
With resolution comparable to that of shunt resistors, the CQ36 series improves efficiency while maintaining precise control performance in applications such as AC servo motors and robotics, contributing to smaller and more efficient systems.
